The Old Religion

The “Old Religion” is more poetic than factual, it is a myth that emerged in the early 20th century, largely influenced by the discredited theories of Margaret Murray. This narrative suggested an unbroken lineage of pre-Christian Goddess-centred worship that was then later suppressed by Christianity. Historical and archaeological evidence does not support the existence of a unified “Old religion”

Though not ancient in practice, the “Old Religion” myth endures because it offers a compelling origin story, providing a pseudo-spiritual authenticity, and a narrative of resistance to mainstream religious traditions. It is a powerful ideology that is emotionally resonant and symbolically rich, even if it doesn’t reflect historical reality.

While the idea of Witchcraft as a literal Stone Age survival isn’t supported by history, our contemporary Craft draws inspiration from these “Stone Age” crafts and skills to create a more earth-based, grounded spiritual practice. By engaging in ancestral techniques and working with natural materials, we can reconnect with the rhythms of the land and embody a spirituality rooted in deep natural awareness. These practices aren’t about recreating an unbroken lineage but about honoring the witch’s relationship with the Earth in ways that echo our earliest ancestors—offering a practical and spiritual counterbalance to the disconnection of modern life.
